A Trade Plate number identifies the holder of the Trade License rather than the vehicle on which they are displayed.
The Trade Plate allows the motor trader, or tester, to carry out their business without the burden of registering and taxing every vehicle temporarily in their possession and also permits the use of untaxed vehicles on the public highway.
From 2013 onwards, a numbers only series was issued, consisting of 5 numbers (including any preceding zeros).
Since around 2017 trade plates must not cover the vehicle’s existing number plates (except on motorcycles). Neither should they be displayed inside the vehicle.
